SAILING BOAT BUYING GUIDE

Choosing a sailing boat for coastal cruising or longer passages

Start with your sailing plans

Weekend sailing, club racing and extended cruising call for different priorities. When comparing used sailboats, consider how many people will sail, who will handle the boat and how the cockpit and accommodation suit your plans. Review the asking price alongside the equipment actually included.

Look beyond length and model year

Check beam and draught against your intended berth and cruising area. Ask about the condition and age of the sails, standing rigging and running rigging, along with servicing of the auxiliary engine. A similar model year does not mean two yachts have the same maintenance history.

Before arranging the purchase

Request the sail inventory, service records and details of repairs or modifications. Consider an independent survey and a sea trial before making a final decision.
